I’ve been asked so many times before what my style is. And every answer goes a little like this…
‘Umm, well I guess, kind of a mix of classic and boho… and masculine but also feminine, with a bit of glitter thrown in’. Yep, clear as mud. For a long time I thought I had to define my style with one word, so I was constantly trying to figure out what that word was.
Eventually I learnt that it is impossible to define the way I dress within one genre. I swap and change my style depending on the seasons, my mood and what I’m doing. A complete eclectic – that’s me.
Years ago that meant over-buying in a million different styles, only to wear items once or twice and only ever with a handful of other pieces. Now, at the ripe old age of 28 I have learnt to buy much more consciously and ensure that what I’m buying can be worn in many different ways with plenty of other pieces I already have in my wardrobe.
I’m a bit in love with my new polka dot dress from Decjuba. I actually bought it in a mad rush for a night out, and ended up with it in a size too big. It is also not remotely what I would usually wear out so when I put it on that night I wasn’t a fan and decided to take it back. That was, until a couple of days later when I started playing around with it as day wear. Bingo – it’s perfect for how I like to dress for day time outings, and the size 10 means it’s super comfortable for running around all day. I love dressing up during the day – what’s the fun in owning beautiful pieces that are only suitable for that once a month girls night?!
The look I had in mind when I bought this dress was super feminine. A girly ponytail with my new summer faves – my Castañer espadrilles, and a light jacket (this one still available from Sheike) considering it’s Spring and can still be a little chilly. I love this look for heading out during the day – brunch, a winery tour, a good old fashioned Sunday sesh in the sun….
But I was never going to love this dress if I could only wear it one way – cue an epic leather jacket. This gem is from Sabotage in Bunbury where we used to live, and is by Hunt No More. It was an anniversary present from Mitch quite a few years ago, but Megan at Sabotage always handpicks the best of the best each season so no doubt you will easily be able to find a classic.
I bloody love this look. The day I shot these photos I wore this entire outfit out for casual drinks and felt a million bucks. As much as I love feeling feminine, there’s nothing like a hint of leather to make you feel sexy too. These boots are from Betts from last winter and they have served me pretty well – I do think this is the last year I’ll get out of them though so I’m definitely on the hunt for some higher quality chunky heeled boots! I can’t usually get away with ankle boots and a skirt, but the split down the side of these boots makes them so flattering and stops them from cutting your legs off at the top. Similar here.
Here are another couple of examples – I bought the white dress for our rehearsal dinner and wore the cape with it too. It’s so stunning and beautifully fitted so I’m keen to get more wear out of it!
Dress – Finders Keepers
Cape – Sheike (no longer available but they are always getting new ones in)
Nude Heels – Betts (old but there is always something similar available)
Velvet Bomber Jacket – Dotti
Sneakers – Converse Daintys in denim
I hope this inspires you guys to get creative with what’s already in your wardrobe and make sure you’re getting the most wear you can get out of all your pieces. Happy Dress ups!
